Welcome to Westlake International School Boarding House – the ideal home away from home where your child can experience the best boarding has to offer.
Nestled among refreshingly scenic hills and lakes in Kampar, WIS Boarding provides a highly conducive environment for focused study and healthy personal development. Boarders gain valuable life skills, including time management, self-regulation and valuable social skills, as they learn to live together in mutual respect and harmony. It’s also a great place to forge lifelong friendships and cherished memories and come out of their experience at Westlake as confident, competent individuals.
Our team of trained Boarding House Parents are available on a full-time basis to provide care and guidance to boarders while facilitating the development of a strong sense of excellence and independence. We achieve this by having a comprehensive, holistic method that encompasses character development and academic progress, supplemented by enriching student lives via athletics and talent development.
Westlake International School is a member of the Boarding Schools’ Association (BSA) UK, which champions high standards of safeguarding and wellbeing for boarders.
Attaining BSA membership ensures Westlake Boarding maintains international standards, and thus, assures parents that their children are well cared for.
Strategically located a stone’s throw from the school courtyard, our on-campus boarding premise comprises five family-style cluster homes, each managed by the Boarding House Parents. The school divides these homes to:
Designed with their needs in mind, boarders have the comfort of fully furnished private bedrooms with attached bathrooms and air conditioning. The bedrooms open out to a shared common area with a kitchenette equipped with all one needs for a nightcap before bed.
A quick run to the ground floor, and you’re at the House Chill-Out; spacious and comfortable, with a designated study area, a well-equipped kitchen for preparing light meals, as well as a homely lounge area where boarders can chill, watch television or play games.
Safety and security are paramount. The school equips the boarding grounds and common areas with CCTVs, and school guards provide round the clock security. Access to the boarding house is strict, with visitors requiring registration and verification before receiving visitor passes.
We recognise that boarding is an excellent way to develop living skills; hence we encourage boarders to keep their rooms and shared living spaces tidy and manage their laundry.
Whilst boarders work on these life skills, the school does provide laundry and housekeeping services. Laundry services are provided daily, and housekeeping staff clean the boarding houses twice a week
Boarders enjoy well balanced and nutritious meals prepared by the school cafeteria team (managed by Grand Kampar Hotel), including Asian and western cuisine. On weekends, boarders receive allowances to eat out.
The school promotes healthy living by encouraging boarders to engage in sports every evening. They have easy access to the school’s sports facilities, including the Multi-Purpose Hall with badminton and basketball courts, fields for football and frisbee, netball courts, indoor artificial turf, table tennis room, swimming pool and gym. The boarding staff supervise all after-school sports activities.
The Boarding Sick Bay, located within the boarding compound, includes a treatment room, an equipped orthopaedic room, and bedrooms for recuperating boarders. Boarders who fall ill or are injured will be well cared for by our Boarding House Nurse in the Sick Bay.
Apart from ensuring a safe and secure living environment, boarding at Westlake aims to balance work and play while providing stimulating activities that broaden their learning experiences. A carefully crafted daily schedule ensures that boarders have ample time to complete homework assignments, pursue sports, rest and play, and enjoy building friendships.
During the weekends, boarders are exposed to uncommon sports events such as archery and enjoy excursions to nearby towns. Aside from the termly Pasar Malam Night and Birthday Celebrations, boarders look forward to special events such as BHP Appreciation Day, “Blow Water” sessions (a mentoring programme, ask us about it!), Boarders’ Camp and movie nights.
At Westlake, we recognise the growth potential of all our boarders, especially during the teen years. Our team of fully trained, full-time Boarding House Parents closely supervise the ins and outs of boarding life. They not only provide care and guidance but are very passionate about developing these teenagers into individuals who can make a difference for society.
One of Boarding at Westlake’s strong suit is the consistent academic support provided to the boarders. Boarding House Parents work very closely with teachers who send them weekly summaries of assignments so that they can monitor each boarder’s work. At the end of every term, they meet again to track students’ progress and discuss strategies and action plans to facilitate academic excellence.
Boarders’ homework assignments and revision are completed every evening during the scheduled Preparatory Time – a one and a half-hour block of focused study. Senior students have additional intensive study sessions on Sunday. In addition, once a week, school teachers hold Academic Coaching Sessions for boarders to focus on specific subjects once a week. For Boarders who may require further assistance, the school arranges one-to-one tutoring held within the boarding premises. Lastly, for our boarders to improve their effectiveness when studying, all new boarders attend study skills workshops covering practical skills such as active reading, annotating, note-taking, and memorisation.
